Muslim Presence in Thiès Thiès, a major city in western Senegal, has long been home to a significant Muslim community. The city's religious landscape is shaped by the broader Senegalese Islamic tradition, with Sufi brotherhoods playing a central role in daily life. While specific historical details are not documented here, the presence of numerous mosques and prayer spaces reflects a deep-rooted Islamic heritage that continues to thrive.

Community Implantation and Mosques The Muslim community in Thiès is well-served by a network of prayer places extending into surrounding areas. Notable among them is the Grande Mosquée de Tivaouane, located about 22 km away in Tivaouane, a prominent religious center. Within Thiès itself and nearby communes such as Bargny Gouddau, Sébikotane, and Tienaba, dozens of mosques provide regular prayer services. These include the Grande Mosquée de Bargny Gouddau, Mosquée de Sébikotane, and La grande mosquée de Thienaba, among others. The widespread distribution of these prayer spaces underscores the vibrant Muslim presence across the region.

Prayer Time Orientation Prayer times in Thiès follow the five daily prayers: Fajr (dawn), Dhuhr (noon), Asr (afternoon), Maghrib (sunset), and Isha (night). These times vary throughout the year due to changes in sunrise and sunset, influenced by the city's latitude and the season. The calculation method used determines the precise angles for Fajr and Isha. Thiès is in the Africa/Dakar timezone. The Qibla direction for prayer is oriented towards Mecca, which lies to the east-northeast. Understanding these rhythms helps residents and visitors plan their daily worship accordingly.
