Mosques • Nicosia

Nicosia, the divided capital of Cyprus, hosts a notable concentration of historic and active mosques and prayer rooms, particularly in the northern sector (Lefkoşa) and the southern Greek Cypriot side. Based on available mapped records, over 20 prayer places are listed within a 50 km radius, with the majority clustered in the walled city and its immediate surroundings. The most prominent listed mosques include Selimiye Camii (formerly the Cathedral of Saint Sophia), located just 0.1 km from the city centre on Selimiye Sk, and Omeriye Mosque on Platia Tillirias, both serving as key landmarks for the Muslim community.

In the northern Lefkoşa area, prayer places are densely concentrated in the historic core, with mosques such as Sarayönü Mosque on Ankara Sk, Turunçlu Fethiye Mosque on Beliğ Paşa Sk, Haydarpaşa Mosque on Kirlizade Sk, and İplik Pazarı Mosque on İplik Pazarı Sk all within a few hundred metres of each other. Further out, Yenişehir Şehitler Camii on Atatürk Caddesi and Müftü Ziya Cami on Şht. Aziz Güner Sk serve the expanding residential zones. The southern side of Nicosia also features Bayraktar Mosque on Konstantinou Palaiologou and Tophane Mosque, reflecting the city's mixed heritage.

Beyond the city centre, listed prayer places extend to nearby communes and suburbs: Hala Sultan Camii is located 7.1 km away on the Lefkoşa-Gazimağusa Anayolu in Haspolat, while Near East University Mosque serves the Ortaköy campus area 6.3 km from the centre. Metehan Camisi in Metehan and Djami Kebir Mosque in Larnaca (38.6 km) are also included in the mapped records. This distribution shows that Muslim residents and visitors can find prayer facilities across multiple sectors of Nicosia and its surrounding districts, from the historic walled city to modern suburbs and university campuses.

Check the exact address and distance of each mosque before visiting, as some are located in the northern (Lefkoşa) or southern sectors of Nicosia. Contact details and opening hours are not provided in the current listing; verify directly with the mosque or local community. Many historic mosques may have restricted access during prayer times or renovation.
