The Bibi-Khanym Mosque, located in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, is a monumental mosque built between 1399 and 1404 by Timur (Tamerlane) after his campaign in India. It was one of the largest mosques in the Islamic world at the time, featuring a massive entrance arch (iwan) and a large courtyard surrounded by galleries. The mosque is named after Timur's wife, Saray Mulk Khanum, also known as Bibi-Khanym. Over the centuries, the mosque suffered from earthquakes and neglect, but extensive restoration efforts have preserved its grandeur. Today, it stands as a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major tourist attraction, admired for its intricate tilework, towering minarets, and historical significance.
